This week on Fight Picks with the Pros we sat down with UFC Hall of Famer Urijah Faber. We reviewed five picks on the upcoming UFC 254 card featuring Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje as the main event.
We’ll go through Urijah’s fight picks and his thoughts behind each decision.
Players start with $100 salary to chose 6 different fighters. There is one MVP slot that awards 1.5x points and 5 regular slots. To stay under budget you’ll have to find some underdogs that you believe in.
Pick#1 (1.5xMVP) – Justin Gaethje $18
With his MVP (1.5x points) Urijah chose main event fighter Justin Gaethje. Justin is a -260 underdog in the fight but has an opportunity to generate a lot of points regardless of a win or a loss. Gaethje isn’t called “The Highlight” for nothing, if this fight goes 5 rounds there’s a good chance Gaethje will have touched him up pretty good, generating plenty of points.
Urijah said “Ive bet against Khabib in the past and its always bit me in the ass, I’m predicting Khabib, picking Gaethje.“
(Gaethje has an impressive 80% success on takedown defense)
Pick #2 – Khabib Nurmagomedov $24
In this slot He picked Khabib. Urijah picked several underdogs so he had enough salary to pick 2 of the top fighters on the roster. We believe this fight could go the distance resulting in a ton of points for both fighters. Khabib is likely to score a lot of points with his take downs and vicious ground and pound.
(Khabib averages 5.35 takedowns per 15 mins)
Pick #3 – Robert Whittaker $15
With the 3rd pick of Urijah’s FanDuel roster Urijah chose former middleweight champ Robert Whittaker, Robert’s facing a dangerous opponent in Jared Cannonier, but Urijah thinks he has what it takes to get the victory.
Urijah said “They’re both up for a title shot, but I’m gunna go with the vet.”
Pick #4 – Tai Tuivasa $15
Next Urijah went with Tai Tuivasa, mostly because of his reputation doing “Shoeies“. Where Tuivasa has someone take off their shoe, so he can poor a beer inside and chug it down on the spot.
Urijah said “Tai is the younger guy, he’s probably aging a bit quicker than Stephan because he’s been doing “shoies” on the regular, which is disgusting but I still think he’s gunna be a slight favorite on that one.”
Pick #5 – Walt Harris $15
With this Pick Urijah chose Walt Harris who is facing a beast of an opponent in Alexander Volkov. Combined these fighters have 24 total 1st round KO/TKOs so it seems likely this fight could end with an early finish. With Volkov’s striking and kickboxing backround its hard to see “The Big Ticket” out pointing Volkov, so he’ll likely need that early TKO.
Urijah said “Walt Harris, I’m gunna pick because I’ve got a soft spot for a guy like that, who’s been through so much, and I think a win is gunna be part of that story.”
In Pick # 6 – Sam Alvey $8
With his final pick, running low on his salary Urijah’s went with Sam Alvey, the biggest underdog on the Card. Urijah said “he prayed with Sam before one of Sam’s fights and couldn’t go against his heart on this pick.”
