UFC Vegas 23: Who’s Next For Marvin Vettori And Others?

With a big win over Kevin Holland in the main event of UFC Vegas 23, Marvin Vettori moved one step closer to the middleweight title. ‘The Italian Dream’ outwrestled Holland throughout their five-round fight to cruise to a comfortable unanimous decision victory. Vettori called out Israel Adesanya in his post-fight interview, saying that he deserves to fight for the belt more than anyone else in the division.

In the co-main event, Britain’s Arnold Allen put on a smart performance against a hard-hitting Sodiq Yusuff, rocking him twice in the fight. Yusuff was tough enough to survive both times but lost via unanimous decision.

Elsewhere, Julian Marquez finished Sam Alvey with a brutal rear-naked choke after rocking his opponent in the second round, strawweight prospect MacKenzie Dern continued her winning ways against Nina Nunes via a first-round submission victory and Daniel Rodriguez picked apart Mike Perry to win via unanimous decision.

With UFC Vegas 23 in the rearview mirror, let’s take a look at who’s next for the winners.

Marvin Vettori

Should Fight: Paulo Costa

Vettori is certain that he deserves to fight for the title, more than the winner of Robert Whittaker vs Kelvin Gastelum at UFC Vegas 24. While Vettori makes a strong case, should Whittaker beat Gastelum in less than a week’s time, he should be the next in line to challenge Israel Adesanya.

Ideally, Vettori needs a win against a top-five contender to lay claim to a title shot, and so does Paulo Costa. Given that Vettori enters the top five on Tuesday, he vs Costa should be the fight to make next. Costa’s coming off a brutal TKO loss to Adesanya at UFC 253 and Vettori’s on a solid win streak. It will make sense for them to fight each other for the number one contender’s spot.

Arnold Allen

Should Fight: Winner of Korean Zombie vs Dan Ige

Arnold Allen sits at number ten in the featherweight rankings as of today, but will definitely jump a couple of places up on Tuesday. A jump-up in the rankings also means a step-up in competition, and the Brit is absolutely ready for it. However, with none of the top 10 featherweights free at the moment, he’ll have to wait a bit.

In his post-fight press conference, Allen called for a fight with the winner of Korean Zombie vs Dan Ige, set to take place at UFC Fight Night 190 in June. The fight certainly makes sense because Allen has been a top prospect for quite a while now and deserves his big fight to move closer to the belt.

Julian Marquez

Should Fight: Sean Strickland

With a massive win over Sam Alvey at UFC Vegas 23, Julian Marquez deserves a crack at someone in the top 15, ideally the number 15 ranked Sean Strickland, who’s also on a three-fight winning streak.

Strickland has been in the UFC since 2014, fighting athletes in the bottom tier of the welterweight and middleweight division. He’s 9-3 in the UFC, with two of his losses coming at the hands of Kamaru Usman and Santiago Ponzinibbio. He deserves to fight a recognizable name, and Marquez has become quite a known personality due to his unconventional post-fight callouts.

It’s also a good fight for Marquez, because it will both be a tough test and a major opportunity for ‘The Cuban Missile Crisis’.

MacKenzie Dern

Should Fight: Joanna Jedrzejczyk

MacKenzie Dern will likely enter the top five when the UFC updates its rankings on Tuesday. She’s on a five-fight win streak and looks in the best shape of her life inside the Octagon. With champion Weili Zhang booked to fight Rose Namajunas at UFC 261 later this month, Dern should be matched up with Joanna Jedrzejczyk in a potential title eliminator.

Of course, there’s no clarity on the former strawweight champion’s future and she’s demanding an improved salary and a decent contract from the UFC, but should the world’s biggest MMA promotion do the right thing, we will be in for a treat.

Daniel Rodriguez

Should Fight: Miguel Baeza

Daniel Rodriguez put on a striking clinic against Mike Perry, whose future in the UFC looks bleak. For Rodriguez however, the sky must be the limit after his most recent victory, and he would certainly be looking to fight a top 15 opponent next.

However, he needs one more fight before he enters the top 15, and Miguel Baeza would be an excellent option. ‘Caramel Thunder’ is undefeated in his professional MMA career, and has won each of his three fights in the UFC via stoppage. Both guys don’t like to leave it in the hands of the judges, and both are looking to enter the top 15. Therefore, a fight between the two makes the most sense.

Who’s next for Marvin Vettori, Arnold Allen, Julian Marquez, MacKenzie Dern, and Daniel Rodriguez after UFC Vegas 23?
