UFC Vegas 27: Garbrant vs Font Fight Picks

The stakes are high in the Fight Night main event showdown between Cody Garbrant and Rob Font. After coming off of 3 consecutive losses, Garbrant rebounded last year with a knockout of the year candidate over Raphael Assuncao and is looking to pick up where he left off. Front, on the other hand, is riding a 3 fight win streak coming off of his most impressive UFC win to date with a TKO victory over Marlon Moraes. The bantamweight title picture is in a unique place right now, an impressive win from either Garbrandt or Font is likely to result in a very big fight for the victor.

Cody Garbrant (-102) vs Rob Font (-116)

It’s no wonder the fanduel odds are so close for this fight, as both fighters have a lot of similarities in their styles. They are both primarily heavy on boxing, and both have a penchant for bringing the fight to their opponent. Font has very clean boxing, closes the distance well, and does a good job of mixing up his striking and takedowns. Garbrandt also has very clean boxing skills but also possesses a lot of power in his big mits. Font typically has more output and does an awesome job of working the body and landing uppercuts. Garbrandt may have a little lower output, but has bigger power, and is more efficient with the strikes he throws and is likely the faster of the two.

At the end of the day

There are so many factors at play in any fight, but especially at the elite level. But provided Garbrandt manages his emotions and fights the way he did in his last fight against Assuncao, the victory is his for the taking. He likely takes some damage in the process, but eventually, he will find his mark and end the contest inside the distance.

Pick: Cody Garbrant

Yan Xiaonon (-130) vs Carla Esparza (+108)

Speaking of title contender matchups, the Yan Xiaonon vs Carla Esparza contest most certainly has title implications. Xiaonon has compiled a 6 fight win streak since entering the UFC in 2017 and is coming off of a real confidence booster of a victory over Claudia Gadelha. The former strawweight champion Carla Esparza has had a spotty record since losing the title to Joanna Jedezejczyk 6 years ago. But has hit her stride over the past couple of years with a 4 fight win streak and seemingly performing better than ever.

At the end of the day

This is a classic striker vs grappler matchup. Xiaonon walks forward and throws every limb she has at her opponents for 15 minutes straight. She primarily punches but is good for a head kick and or knees when in close. She does not stop and weaponizes a high output to overwhelm her opponents. Esparza’s striking has come a long way, but it would be ill-advised to stand with Xiaonon as her striking defense isn’t the strongest. But the experience of Esparaza will be the x-factor in this contest, allowing her to stay out of trouble long enough to hit the takedown and control the fight on the ground on route to a decision victory. The fanduel underdog is bound to cash in on this one.

Pick: Carla Esparza

Jack Hermansson (-154) vs Edmen Shahbazyan (+130)

Both Hermansson and Shahbazyan are coming off of losses, but it’s the fanduel underdog Shabbazyan who is perhaps entering this fight a little worse for wear. His last fight against Derek Brunson was supposed to be his coming-out party but instead ended with him being on the wrong side of a TKO stoppage. Hermansson’s loss came off of a Fight of the Night performance where he was edged out on the scorecards by Middleweight title contender Marvin Vettori.

At the end of the day

We have another striker vs grappler on our hands. Despite Shabazyans tough loss, he still has a lot of potential and a lot of time to grow. On the feet, there is no question that he holds the advantage over Hermansson. But on the ground, it’s Hermansson’s world. Hermansson is an intelligent tactful fighter with a game plan, and should he follow that game plan and penetrate Shabazyans’s takedown defense, it’ll mean a victory for the fanduel favorite

Pick: Jack Hermansson

Ben Rothwell (-320) vs Chris Barnett (+260)

Chris “Huggy Bear” Barnett has finally made it to the UFC. After a professional career that spans 27 fights that have taken place all over the globe, he has finally made it to the show and is matched up with a Heavyweight that couldn’t be any more experienced in Ben Rothwell. Fanduel has Rothwell as the heavy favorite in this fight for good reason. Not only does he have far more competition in the big show, and against a far higher caliber of competition. He will also have a significant reach advantage over the 5’9 heavyweight UFC newcomer.

At the end of the day

Both fighters are uber-powerful and have the vast majority of their wins by knockout, but it’ll be the length and experience of Rothwell that will shine through in this fight. Despite having a career spanning 20 years and 51 fights, Rothwell is still remarkably intact and performing quite well at this stage in his career.

Pick: Ben Rothwell

The main event between Cody Garbrant and Rob Font is surely to produce fireworks, neither guy is even capable of being in a boring fight. It’s just the matter of who is left standing when the dust settles, in all likelihood, it’ll be the bantamweight division’s newest title contender.
